What are certified copies of passports and why do I need one?
At some point, you may be asked to prove your identity by an organisation such as a bank. This is something that they have to do to make sure that you are who you claim to be, and also because they are obliged to according to Anti-Money Laundering and Know Your Customer legislation.
Certified copies of passports are one of the main ways you can prove your identity, but copies of other documents will also suffice. For example, a certified copy of a driving licence will be accepted as proof of identity.
A Notary Public such as ourselves will have to carry out the certification process for you, as they are a registered legal professional with the power to do so. We can even notarise a copy of your passport if you need to use it abroad.
Other documents that might need certified copies
We shall cover some of the other documents that you can have copies of certified by someone such as Notary Public like us. Documents that can have certified copies include:
- Driving licences
- Passports
- Proof of address documents such as bank statements and utility bills
Importance of proof of address
In some cases, you may also need to provide the organisation requesting that you prove your identity, proof of your address as well.
Proof of address is just as important as proof of identity, as it can help to prove who you are, as well as proving that you live where you claim to so that they can post any important letters to you.
Our requirements for proof of identity and address
Organisations such as banks are not the only ones who need to see your proof of identity or proof of address; we also use them as part of our process so that we know we are helping a person who is who they say they are, and to make sure that we can send any important documents back to a safe and secure location.
Before we can notarise any documents for you, we will need you to provide us with both proof of identity and address. Only then can we proceed with your appointment.
