When do you need a Note of Protest?

You may need a Note of Protest (NOP) for a variety of reasons including the following:

  • Cargo has been damaged as a result of unexpected wind and sea conditions
  • You suspect or identify damage to the ship
  • Difficult weather conditions has prevented the adoption of precautionary measures
  • Condition of cargo ship renders it susceptible to deterioration during the voyage
  • A severe violation of charter party terms is conducted by the charterer or their agent.
  • The consignee violates charter party terms in failing to discharge cargo and mishandling of freight

General requirements

When drafting a Note of Protest, the following information would be required:

  • Deck logbook pages
  • Official logbook pages
  • Reports on weather conditions
  • Photographic evidence


You may also be required to provide the signatures of any witnesses.
